Power industry contracts in Middle East and Africa for Q1 2020 up 20%

Middle East and Africa power industry contracts activity in Q1 2020 saw 96 contracts announced, marking a rise of 20% over the last four-quarter average of 80, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Middle East and Africa power industry contracts in Q1 2020: Saudi Arabia leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, Saudi Arabia led the activity in Q1 2020 with 14 contracts and a share of 14.6%, up 7% over the previous quarter and up 250% when compared with the last four-quarter average, followed by Bahrain with 12 contracts and a share of 12.5% and Iran (Islamic Republic of Iran) with ten contracts and a share of 10.4% during the quarter.

Looking at the last four-quarter average, the United Arab Emirates held the top spot with nine contracts, followed by Egypt with seven and Iran (Islamic Republic of Iran) with seven contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in Q1 2020

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 34 contracts and a 55.7% share, followed by thermal with 14 contracts and a 23% share and wind with four contracts and a 6.6% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in Middle East and Africa power contracts activity during Q1 2020, with 36 contracts, followed by T&D Project (29) and T&D Equipment (18).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

1. Project Implementation: 45 contracts and a 46.9% share
2. Supply & Erection: 22 contracts and a 22.9% share
3. Consulting & Similar Services: 16 contracts and a 16.7% share
4. Power Purchase Agreement: 11 contracts and an 11.5% share
5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: two contracts and a 2.1% share.

The top issuers of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

1. Emirates Water and Electricity (United Arab Emirates): 7,200MW from three contracts
2. Hyunson Engineering & Construction (Algeria): 1,300MW from one contract
3. Qatar General Electricity and Water (Qatar): 800MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

1. Marubeni (Japan): 5,600MW from three contracts
2. Samsung C&T (South Korea): 2,400MW from one contract
3. Posco International (South Korea), Hyundai Engineering & Construction (South Korea) and Hyundai Engineering (South Korea): 1,300MW capacity from one contract.
