Power industry contracts in Middle East and Africa for Q1 2021 down 40%

Middle East and Africa power industry contracts activity in Q1 2021 saw 61 contracts announced, marking a drop of 40% over the last four-quarter average of 101, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Middle East and Africa power industry contracts in Q1 2021: Saudi Arabia leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, Saudi Arabia led the activity in Q1 2021 with 20 contracts and a share of 32.8%, up 19.5% over the previous quarter and up 67% when compared with the last four-quarter average, followed by Iran with six contracts and a share of 9.8% and Egypt with five contracts and a share of 8.2% during the quarter.

Looking at the last four-quarter average, Saudi Arabia held the top spot with 12 contracts, followed by the United Arab Emirates with eight and Iran with eight contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in Q1 2021

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 14 contracts and a 48.3% share, followed by thermal with 11 contracts and a 37.9% share and wind with three contracts and a 10.3% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Project was the most popular segment in Middle East and Africa power contracts activity during Q1 2021, with 33 contracts, followed by Power Plant (15) and Generation Equipment (8).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 37 contracts and a 60.7% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 13 contracts and a 21.3% share
  3. Consulting & Similar Services: five contracts and an 8.2% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: four contracts and a 6.6% share
  5. Power Purchase Agreement: two contracts and a 3.3% share.

Power contracts in Q1 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. Ministry of Electricity, Iraq (Iraq): 1,400MW from one contract
  2. Dubal Holding L (United Arab Emirates) and Mubadala Investment (United Arab Emirates): 624MW from one contract
  3. Ministry of Finance and Economic Development: 500MW capacity from one contract.

Power contracts in Q1 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction (China): 624MW from one contract
  2. Abu Dhabi Future Energy (United Arab Emirates): 500MW from one contract
  3. Larsen & Toubro (India): 300MW capacity from one contract.
