Power industry contracts in Middle East and Africa for September 2020 remain flat

Middle East and Africa power industry contracts activity in September 2020 saw 30 contracts announced, marking a flat growth over the last 12-month average of 30, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Middle East and Africa power industry contracts in September 2020: The United Arab Emirates leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, the United Arab Emirates led the activity in September 2020 with six contracts and a share of 20%, up 5% over the previous month and up 200% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Iran with four contracts and a share of 13.3% and Morocco with three contracts and a share of 10% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, Iran held the top spot with three contracts, followed by Saudi Arabia with three and Egypt with two contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in September 2020

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with seven contracts and a 35% share, followed by thermal with six contracts and a 30% share and wind with five contracts and a 25% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in Middle East and Africa as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Project was the most popular segment in September 2020, with 11 contracts, followed by Electricity Procurement (9) and Generation Equipment (8).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

1. Project Implementation: ten contracts and a 33.3% share
2. Power Purchase Agreement: nine contracts and a 30% share
3. Supply & Erection: seven contracts and a 23.3% share
4. Consulting & Similar Services: three contracts and a 10% share
5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: one contract and a 3.3% share.

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

1. Societe Nationale d’Electricite (Democratic Republic of the Congo): 1,000MW from one contract
2. MAPNA Group (Iran): 480MW from one contract
3. New and Renewable Energy Authority (Egypt): 252MW capacity from one contract.

1. SkyPower (Canada): 1,000MW from one contract
