North America electricity procurement contracts activity up 1% in Q4 2020

There were 74 electricity procurement contracts announced in the North America region in Q4 2020, marking a rise of 1% over the last four-quarter average of 73, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Electricity Procurement stood at first place when compared with other power tender categories in the North America region in Q4 2020 with 74 contracts and a 36.3% share, followed by Generation Equipment with 54 contracts and a 26.5% share and Power Plant with 39 contracts and a 19.1% share during the quarter.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Power Purchase Agreement: 64 contracts and an 86.5% share
  2. Electricity Supply: ten contracts and a 13.5% share.

Solar is top technology for North America electricity procurement contracts in Q4 2020

Looking at electricity procurement contracts by the type of technology in the North America region, solar accounted for 59 contracts with an 80.8% share, followed by wind with nine contracts and a 12.3% share and thermal with two contracts and a 2.7% share.

The top issuers of electricity procurement contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Amazon Web Services (United States): 1,210MW from two contracts
  2. McDonald’s: 326MW from two contracts
  3. Northern Indiana Public Service Co L (United States): 280MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Acciona Energia (Spain): 641MW from one contract
  2. Engie (France): 569MW from one contract
  3. EDF Renewables North America (United States): 405MW capacity from three contracts.
