North America power industry contracts activity in December 2020 saw 62 contracts announced, marking a drop of 23% over the last 12-month average of 80, according to GlobalData’s power database.

North America power industry contracts in December 2020: The US leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, the US led the activity in December 2020 with 52 contracts and a share of 83.9%, down 3.6% over the previous month and down 26% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Canada with six contracts and a share of 9.7% and Mexico with two contracts and a share of 3.2% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, the US held the top spot with 70 contracts, followed by Canada with seven and Mexico with two contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in December 2020

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 23 contracts and a 40.4% share, followed by wind with 23 contracts and a 40.4% share and thermal with eight contracts and a 14% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in North America as tracked by GlobalData, Generation Equipment was the most popular segment in December 2020, with 26 contracts, followed by Electricity Procurement (21) and Energy Storage (8).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 27 contracts and a 43.5% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: 20 contracts and a 32.3% share
  3. Project Implementation: ten contracts and a 16.1% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: three contracts and a 4.8% share
  5. Consulting & Similar Services: one contract and a 1.6% share
  6. Electricity Supply: one contract and a 1.6% share.

Power contracts in December 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Amazon Web Services (United States): 1,210MW from two contracts
  2. Terra-Gen L (United States): 1,118MW from one contract
  3. McDonald’s: 326MW capacity from two contracts.

Power contracts in December 2020: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Mortenson Construction (United States): 1,118MW from one contract
  2. Acciona Energia (Spain): 641MW from one contract
  3. Engie (France): 569MW capacity from one contract.
