Oil and gas companies are making moves into the UK energy market.

North America power industry contracts activity in February 2020 saw 32 contracts announced, marking a drop of 43% over the last 12-month average of 56, according to GlobalData’s power database.

North America power industry contracts in February 2020: The US leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, the US led the activity in February 2020 with 26 contracts and a share of 81.3%, down 8.2% over the previous month and down 47% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Canada with four contracts and a share of 12.5% and Mexico with two contracts and a share of 6.3% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, the US held the top spot with 49 contracts, followed by Canada with three and Mexico with three contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in February 2020

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 14 contracts and a 51.9% share, followed by wind with eight contracts and a 29.6% share and nuclear with three contracts and an 11.1% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in North America as tracked by GlobalData, Electricity Procurement was the most popular segment in February 2020, with 11 contracts, followed by Generation Equipment (8) and Power Plant (8).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 12 contracts and a 37.5% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: ten contracts and a 31.3% share
  3. Project Implementation: five contracts and a 15.6% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: three contracts and a 9.4% share
  5. Electricity Supply: one contract and a 3.1% share
  6. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: one contract and a 3.1% share.

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  2. Portland General Electric (United States): 172MW from two contracts
  3. Basin Electric Power Coop (United States): 128MW capacity from one contract.

  1. NextEra Energy (United States): 298MW from one contract
