North America power industry contracts activity in May 2020 saw 71 contracts announced, marking a rise of 9% over the last 12-month average of 65, according to GlobalData’s power database.

North America power industry contracts in May 2020: The US leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, the US led the activity in May 2020 with 67 contracts and a share of 94.4%, up 1% over the previous month and up 18% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Mexico with three contracts and a share of 4.2% and Canada with one contract and a share of 1.4% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, the US held the top spot with 57 contracts, followed by Canada with four and Mexico with three contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in May 2020

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 33 contracts and a 58.9% share, followed by wind with ten contracts and a 17.9% share and thermal with nine contracts and a 16.1% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in North America as tracked by GlobalData, Electricity Procurement was the most popular segment in May 2020, with 30 contracts, followed by Power Plant (17) and Energy Storage (16).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Power Purchase Agreement: 28 contracts and a 39.4% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 21 contracts and a 29.6% share
  3. Project Implementation: 17 contracts and a 23.9% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: two contracts and a 2.8% share
  5. Electricity Supply: two contracts and a 2.8% share
  6. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: one contract and a 1.4% share.

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Southern California Edison (United States): 870MW from eight contracts
  2. Tenaska Clear Creek Wind L (United States): 242MW from one contract
  3. Portland General Electric (United States): 221MW capacity from two contracts.

Power contracts in May 2020: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. NextEra Energy Resources L (United States): 585MW from five contracts
  2. M. A. Mortenson (United States): 328MW from two contracts
  3. Blattner Energy (United States), Public Utility District No. one of Douglas County (United States) and Southern Power (United States): 160MW capacity from one contract.
