Power industry contracts in North America for Q2 2020 up 28%

North America power industry contracts activity in Q2 2020 saw 252 contracts announced, marking a rise of 28% over the last four-quarter average of 197, according to GlobalData’s power database.

North America power industry contracts in Q2 2020: The US leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, the US led the activity in Q2 2020 with 223 contracts and a share of 88.5%, a flat growth over the previous quarter and up 30% when compared with the last four-quarter average, followed by Canada with 23 contracts and a share of 9.1% and Mexico with five contracts and a share of 2% during the quarter.

Looking at the last four-quarter average, the US held the top spot with 171 contracts, followed by Canada with 15 and Mexico with ten contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in Q2 2020

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 109 contracts and a 58.6% share, followed by wind with 43 contracts and a 23.1% share and thermal with 26 contracts and a 14% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Electricity Procurement was the most popular segment in North America power contracts activity during Q2 2020, with 88 contracts, followed by Power Plant (56) and Generation Equipment (45).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 89 contracts and a 35.3% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: 84 contracts and a 33.3% share
  3. Project Implementation: 54 contracts and a 21.4% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 12 contracts and a 4.8% share
  5. Consulting & Similar Services: nine contracts and a 3.6% share
  6. Electricity Supply: four contracts and a 1.6% share.

The top issuers of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Southern California Edison (United States): 870MW from eight contracts
  2. ENGIE North America (United States): 548.2MW from two contracts
  3. Verizon Communications (United States): 384MW capacity from two contracts.

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. M. A. Mortenson (United States): 876.2MW from four contracts
  2. NextEra Energy Resources L (United States): 585MW from five contracts
