Power industry contracts in North America for September 2020 up 7%
Oil and gas companies are making moves into the UK energy market.

North America power industry contracts activity in September 2020 saw 80 contracts announced, marking a rise of 7% over the last 12-month average of 75, according to GlobalData’s power database.

North America power industry contracts in September 2020: The US leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, the US led the activity in September 2020 with 72 contracts and a share of 90%, up 10% over the previous month and up 11% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Canada with five contracts and a share of 6.3% and Mexico with three contracts and a share of 3.8% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, the US held the top spot with 65 contracts, followed by Canada with six and Mexico with two contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in September 2020

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 33 contracts and a 45.8% share, followed by wind with 23 contracts and a 31.9% share and thermal with seven contracts and a 9.7% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in North America as tracked by GlobalData, Generation Equipment was the most popular segment in September 2020, with 28 contracts, followed by Electricity Procurement (27) and Power Plant (13).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 36 contracts and a 45% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: 23 contracts and a 28.8% share
  3. Project Implementation: 12 contracts and a 15% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: four contracts and a 5% share
  5. Electricity Supply: four contracts and a 5% share
  6. Consulting & Similar Services: one contract and a 1.3% share.

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Clean Power Alliance (United States): 364.9MW from two contracts
  2. General Motors (United States): 180MW from one contract
  3. Rocky Mountain Power (United States): 155MW capacity from two contracts.

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. White Construction (United States): 302MW from one contract
  2. 8minute Solar Energy L (United States): 300MW from one contract
  3. DE Shaw Renewable Investments L (United States): 205MW capacity from three contracts.
