Global power industry contracts for August 2020 up 2%

Power industry contracts activity in August 2020 saw 379 contracts announced, marking a rise of 2% over the last 12-month average of 372, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Power industry contracts in August 2020: Europe leads global activity

On comparing contracts activity in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 194 contracts and a share of 51.2% during August 2020, followed by Asia-Pacific with 96 contracts and a 25.3% share and North America with 55 contracts and a 14.5% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 20 contracts and a 5.3% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with 14 contracts and a 3.7% share.

On the basis of the last 12-month average, Europe held a lead over others with 158 contracts, followed by Asia-Pacific with 84.

Solar tops by technology in August 2020

Looking at contracts by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 149 contracts and a 47.9% share, followed by wind with 101 contracts and a 32.5% share and thermal with 31 contracts and a 10% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment during August 2020, with 156 contracts, followed by Generation Equipment (92) and Electricity Procurement (55).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 154 contracts and a 40.6% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 117 contracts and a 30.9% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 47 contracts and a 12.4% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 31 contracts and an 8.2% share
  5. Consulting & Similar Services: 22 contracts and a 5.8% share
  6. Electricity Supply: eight contracts and a 2.1% share.

Power contracts in August 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (Afghanistan): 3,000MW from one contract
  2. Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (Ireland): 1,275.54MW from 82 contracts
  3. NTPC (India): 1,170MW capacity from four contracts.

Power contracts in August 2020: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Northwest Electric Power Design Institute (China): 4,000MW from two contracts
  2. PAL four Solar Energy L (United Arab Emirates): 3,000MW from one contract
  3. NHPC (India): 1,300MW capacity from two contracts.
