Global power industry contracts in August 2020: Thermal technology down 9%

Thermal technology contracts activity in August 2020 saw 31 contracts announced, marking a drop of 9% over the last 12-month average of 34, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Gas was the top category in thermal technology in terms of number of contracts for the month, accounting for 21 contracts and a 65.6% share, followed by Oil with six contracts and an 18.8% share. Coal stood in third place with five contracts and a 15.6% share.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, thermal held the third position in terms of number of contracts during August 2020 with a 10% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Thermal technology tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 15 contracts and a 48.4% share
  2. Project Implementation: seven contracts and a 22.6% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: six contracts and a 19.4% share
  4. Power Purchase Agreement: two contracts and a 6.5% share
  5. Consulting & Similar Services: one contract and a 3.2% share.

Europe leads thermal contracts activity in August 2020

Comparing contracts activity in thermal technology in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 12 contracts and a share of 38.7% during August 2020, followed by North America with seven contracts and a 22.6% share and Asia-Pacific with six contracts and a 19.4% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with four contracts and a 12.9% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with two contracts and a 6.5% share.

Thermal technology contracts in August 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Thermal technology for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Kineticor Resource (Canada): 900MW from one contract
  2. Elektrocieplownia Stalowa Wola (Poland): 450MW from one contract
  3. Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Thailand): 180MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Northwest Electric Power Design Institute (China): 4,000MW from two contracts
  2. Overland Contracting (United States) and PCL Construction Group (Canada): 900MW from one contract
  3. Zaklady Pomiarowo Badawcze Energetyki Energopomiar (Poland) and Energoprojekt-Katowice (Poland): 450MW capacity from one contract.
