Global power industry contracts in May 2021: Wind technology down 27%

Wind technology contracts activity in May 2021 saw 77 contracts announced, marking a drop of 27% over the last 12-month average of 106, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Onshore was the top category in wind technology in terms of number of contracts for the month, accounting for 62 contracts and an 80.5% share, followed by Offshore with 14 contracts and an 18.2% share. Onshore Repowered stood in third place with one contract and a 1.3% share.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, wind held the second position in terms of number of contracts during May 2021 with a 34.4% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Wind technology tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Power Purchase Agreement: 24 contracts and a 31.2% share
  2. Project Implementation: 20 contracts and a 26% share
  3. Supply & Erection: 19 contracts and a 24.7% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 12 contracts and a 15.6% share
  5. Electricity Supply: two contracts and a 2.6% share.

Europe leads wind contracts activity in May 2021

Comparing contracts activity in wind technology in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 49 contracts and a share of 63.6% during May 2021, followed by Asia-Pacific with 17 contracts and a 22.1% share and North America with seven contracts and a 9.1% share.

In fourth place was South and Central America with four contracts and a 5.2% share.

Wind technology contracts in May 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Wind technology for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzbekistan): 1,500MW from one contract
  2. Urzad Regulacji Energetyki (Poland): 1,440MW from one contract
  3. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 540MW capacity from one contract.

Wind technology contracts in May 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. ACWA Power International (Saudi Arabia): 1,500MW from one contract
  2. Equinor (Norway) and Polenergia (Poland): 1,440MW from one contract
  3. China Energy Engineering Group Planning and Engineering (China): 1,000MW capacity from one contract.
