Global power industry contracts in Q1 2020: Solar technology down 11%

Solar technology contracts activity in Q1 2020 saw 353 contracts announced, marking a drop of 11% over the last four-quarter average of 398, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, solar held the top position in terms of number of contracts during Q1 2020 with a 46.4% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Solar technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

1. Project Implementation: 186 contracts and a 52.7% share
2. Power Purchase Agreement: 81 contracts and a 22.9% share
3. Supply & Erection: 63 contracts and a 17.8% share
4. Electricity Supply: 12 contracts and a 3.4% share
5. Consulting & Similar Services: seven contracts and a 2% share
6. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: four contracts and a 1.1% share.

Europe leads solar contracts activity in Q1 2020

Comparing contracts activity in solar technology in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 109 contracts and a share of 30.9% during Q1 2020, followed by Asia-Pacific with 100 contracts and a 28.3% share and North America with 86 contracts and a 24.4% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 34 contracts and a 9.6% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with 24 contracts and a 6.8% share.

Solar technology contracts in Q1 2020: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Solar technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

1. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 2,400MW from six contracts
2. New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (United States): 1,089.89MW from 17 contracts
3. Rajasthan Solarpark Development (India): 925MW capacity from one contract.

Solar technology contracts in Q1 2020: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

1. China Gezhouba Group International Engineering (China): 1,550MW from three contracts
2. NTPC (India): 925MW from one contract
3. Greenko Group (India): 900MW capacity from one contract.
