Global power industry contracts in Q1 2020: Thermal technology down 2%

Thermal technology contracts activity in Q1 2020 saw 85 contracts announced, marking a drop of 2% over the last four-quarter average of 87, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Gas was the top category in thermal technology in terms of number of contracts for the quarter, accounting for 62 contracts and a 70.5% share, followed by Coal with 15 contracts and a 17% share. Oil stood in third place with 11 contracts and a 12.5% share.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, thermal held the third position in terms of number of contracts during Q1 2020 with an 11.2% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Thermal technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 34 contracts and a 40% share
  2. Project Implementation: 26 contracts and a 30.6% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 15 contracts and a 17.6% share
  4. Power Purchase Agreement: seven contracts and an 8.2% share
  5. Consulting & Similar Services: two contracts and a 2.4% share
  6. Electricity Supply: one contract and a 1.2% share.

Asia-Pacific leads thermal contracts activity in Q1 2020

Comparing contracts activity in thermal technology in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 27 contracts and a share of 31.8% during Q1 2020, followed by North America with 16 contracts and an 18.8% share and Europe with 15 contracts and a 17.6% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 14 contracts and a 16.5% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with 13 contracts and a 15.3% share.

The top issuers of contracts in Thermal technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Emirates Water and Electricity (United Arab Emirates): 7,200MW from three contracts
  2. JERA (Japan): 1,950MW from one contract
  3. Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzbekistan): 1,500MW capacity from one contract.
