Global power industry contracts for Q2 2020 up 22%

Power industry contracts activity in Q2 2020 saw 1,186 contracts announced, marking a rise of 22% over the last four-quarter average of 970, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Power industry contracts in Q2 2020: Europe leads global activity

On comparing contracts activity in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 574 contracts and a share of 48.4% during Q2 2020, followed by North America with 252 contracts and a 21.2% share and Asia-Pacific with 234 contracts and a 19.7% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 72 contracts and a 6.1% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with 54 contracts and a 4.6% share.

On the basis of the last four-quarter average, Europe held a lead over others with 355 contracts, followed by Asia-Pacific with 246.

Solar tops by technology in Q2 2020

Looking at contracts by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 484 contracts and a 49.7% share, followed by wind with 284 contracts and a 29.2% share and thermal with 101 contracts and a 10.4% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in global power contracts activity during Q2 2020, with 477 contracts, followed by Generation Equipment (292) and Electricity Procurement (170).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 475 contracts and a 40.1% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 414 contracts and a 34.9% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 160 contracts and a 13.5% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 66 contracts and a 5.6% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 63 contracts and a 5.3% share
  6. Electricity Supply: eight contracts and a 0.7% share.

Power contracts in Q2 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 10,400MW from nine contracts
  2. NHPC (India): 2,000MW from five contracts
  3. Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzbekistan): 1,740MW capacity from two contracts.

Power contracts in Q2 2020: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Adani Green Energy (India): 8,000MW from one contract
  2. China Gezhouba Group (China): 1,715MW from five contracts
  3. Altmax Holding (Cyprus): 1,500MW capacity from one contract.
