Global power industry contracts in Q2 2020: Thermal technology up 12%

Thermal technology contracts activity in Q2 2020 saw 101 contracts announced, marking a rise of 12% over the last four-quarter average of 90, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Gas was the top category in thermal technology in terms of number of contracts for the quarter, accounting for 59 contracts and a 58.4% share, followed by Oil with 30 contracts and a 29.7% share. Coal stood in third place with 12 contracts and an 11.9% share.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, thermal held the third position in terms of number of contracts during Q2 2020 with a 10.4% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Thermal technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 49 contracts and a 48.5% share
  2. Project Implementation: 20 contracts and a 19.8% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 20 contracts and a 19.8% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: six contracts and a 5.9% share
  5. Power Purchase Agreement: six contracts and a 5.9% share.

Asia-Pacific leads thermal contracts activity in Q2 2020

Comparing contracts activity in thermal technology in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 28 contracts and a share of 27.7% during Q2 2020, followed by Europe with 28 contracts and a 27.7% share and North America with 26 contracts and a 25.7% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 12 contracts and an 11.9% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with seven contracts and a 6.9% share.

The top issuers of contracts in Thermal technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzbekistan): 1,740MW from two contracts
  2. MP Power Management (India): 1,320MW from one contract
  3. Primesouth Lebanon s.a.l.: 640MW capacity from one contract.
