Global power industry contracts in Q3 2019: Thermal technology down 7%

Thermal technology contracts activity in Q3 2019 saw 81 contracts announced, marking a drop of 7% over the last four-quarter average of 87, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Gas was the top category in thermal technology in terms of number of contracts for the quarter, accounting for 49 contracts and a 58.3% share, followed by Coal with 26 contracts and a 31% share. Oil stood in third place with nine contracts and a 10.7% share.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, thermal held the third position in terms of number of contracts during Q3 2019 with a 12.1% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Thermal technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

1. Supply & Erection: 30 contracts and a 37% share
2. Project Implementation: 23 contracts and a 28.4% share
3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 20 contracts and a 24.7% share
4. Power Purchase Agreement: five contracts and a 6.2% share
5. Consulting & Similar Services: two contracts and a 2.5% share
6. Electricity Supply: one contract and a 1.2% share.

Asia-Pacific leads thermal contracts activity in Q3 2019

Comparing contracts activity in thermal technology in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 35 contracts and a share of 43.2% during Q3 2019, followed by North America with 15 contracts and an 18.5% share and Europe with 14 contracts and a 17.3% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 14 contracts and a 17.3% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with three contracts and a 3.7% share.

The top issuers of contracts in Thermal technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

1. JERA (Japan) and JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy (Japan): 2,340MW from one contract
2. Ministry of Electricity, Iraq (Iraq): 1,600MW from one contract
3. Van Phong Power: 1,320MW capacity from one contract.
