Global power industry contracts in Q3 2020: Thermal technology up 15%
Oil and gas companies are making moves into the UK energy market.

Thermal technology contracts activity in Q3 2020 saw 114 contracts announced, marking a rise of 15% over the last four-quarter average of 99, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Gas was the top category in thermal technology in terms of number of contracts for the quarter, accounting for 75 contracts and a 61% share, followed by Oil with 26 contracts and a 21.1% share. Coal stood in third place with 22 contracts and a 17.9% share.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, thermal held the third position in terms of number of contracts during Q3 2020 with an 11.8% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Thermal technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 61 contracts and a 53.5% share
  2. Project Implementation: 23 contracts and a 20.2% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 14 contracts and a 12.3% share
  4. Power Purchase Agreement: ten contracts and an 8.8% share
  5. Consulting & Similar Services: four contracts and a 3.5% share
  6. Electricity Supply: two contracts and a 1.8% share.

Asia-Pacific leads thermal contracts activity in Q3 2020

Comparing contracts activity in thermal technology in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 36 contracts and a share of 31.6% during Q3 2020, followed by Europe with 36 contracts and a 31.6% share and North America with 23 contracts and a 20.2% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 15 contracts and a 13.2% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with four contracts and a 3.5% share.

Thermal technology contracts in Q3 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Thermal technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Taiwan Power (Taiwan): 6,500MW from one contract
  2. Hin Kong Power (Thailand): 1,400MW from one contract
  3. Electric Power Generation Enterprise (Myanmar): 1,250MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. CTCI (Taiwan) and General Electric International (United States): 6,500MW from one contract
  2. Northwest Electric Power Design Institute (China): 4,000MW from two contracts
  3. SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction (China): 3,320MW capacity from two contracts.
