Global power industry contracts in Q4 2019: Hydro technology up 69%

Hydro technology contracts activity in Q4 2019 saw 61 contracts announced, marking a rise of 69% over the last four-quarter average of 36, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, hydro held the fourth position in terms of number of contracts during Q4 2019 with a 7.5% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Hydro technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 34 contracts and a 55.7% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 12 contracts and a 19.7% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: seven contracts and an 11.5% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: four contracts and a 6.6% share
  5. Power Purchase Agreement: three contracts and a 4.9% share
  6. Electricity Supply: one contract and a 1.6% share.

South and Central America leads hydro contracts activity in Q4 2019

Comparing contracts activity in hydro technology in different regions of the globe, South and Central America held the top position with 31 contracts and a share of 50.8% during Q4 2019, followed by Europe with 12 contracts and a 19.7% share and Asia-Pacific with nine contracts and a 14.8% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with seven contracts and an 11.5% share and in fifth place was North America with two contracts and a 3.3% share.

Hydro technology contracts in Q4 2019: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Hydro technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Thailand): 1,225MW from one contract
  2. Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation (Nepal): 918MW from two contracts
  3. Investment Board Nepal: 762MW capacity from one contract.
