Global power industry contracts in Q4 2019: Wind technology up 34%
Oil and gas companies are making moves into the UK energy market.

Wind technology contracts activity in Q4 2019 saw 301 contracts announced, marking a rise of 34% over the last four-quarter average of 224, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Onshore was the top category in wind technology in terms of number of contracts for the quarter, accounting for 236 contracts and a 77.9% share, followed by Offshore with 65 contracts and a 21.5% share. Onshore Repowered stood in third place with two contracts and a 0.7% share.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, wind held the second position in terms of number of contracts during Q4 2019 with a 37% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Wind technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 122 contracts and a 40.5% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 100 contracts and a 33.2% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 50 contracts and a 16.6% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 18 contracts and a 6% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: ten contracts and a 3.3% share
  6. Electricity Supply: one contract and a 0.3% share.

Europe leads wind contracts activity in Q4 2019

Comparing contracts activity in wind technology in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 126 contracts and a share of 41.9% during Q4 2019, followed by South and Central America with 72 contracts and a 23.9% share and Asia-Pacific with 55 contracts and an 18.3% share.

In fourth place was North America with 42 contracts and a 14% share and in fifth place was Middle East and Africa with six contracts and a 2% share.

Wind technology contracts in Q4 2019: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Wind technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Agencia Nacional de Energia Eletrica, Brazil (Brazil): 1,040.25MW from 44 contracts
  2. Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (United States) and Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (United States): 804MW from one contract
  3. NBT (Norway): 750MW capacity from two contracts.

Wind technology contracts in Q4 2019: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Mayflower Wind Energy (United States) and Vineyard Wind (United States): 804MW from one contract
  2. China Electric Power Equipment and Technology (China): 750MW from two contracts
  3. GE Renewable Energy (France): 715MW capacity from one contract.
