Global power industry contracts in Q4 2020: Hydro technology down 9%

Hydro technology contracts activity in Q4 2020 saw 58 contracts announced, marking a drop of 9% over the last four-quarter average of 64, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, hydro held the fourth position in terms of number of contracts during Q4 2020 with a 7.3% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Hydro technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 21 contracts and a 36.2% share
  2. Project Implementation: 16 contracts and a 27.6% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 11 contracts and a 19% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: six contracts and a 10.3% share
  5. Consulting & Similar Services: two contracts and a 3.4% share
  6. Electricity Supply: two contracts and a 3.4% share.

Asia-Pacific leads hydro contracts activity in Q4 2020

Comparing contracts activity in hydro technology in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 22 contracts and a share of 37.9% during Q4 2020, followed by Europe with 17 contracts and a 29.3% share and North America with seven contracts and a 12.1% share.

In fourth place was South and Central America with seven contracts and a 12.1% share and in fifth place was Middle East and Africa with five contracts and an 8.6% share.

Hydro technology contracts in Q4 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Hydro technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Korea Western Power (South Korea): 728MW from one contract
  2. Mapanuepe Hydropower: 500MW from one contract
  3. Nepal Water & Energy Development (Nepal): 216MW capacity from one contract.
