Global power industry contracts in Q4 2020: Thermal technology down 9%

Thermal technology contracts activity in Q4 2020 saw 96 contracts announced, marking a drop of 9% over the last four-quarter average of 106, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Gas was the top category in thermal technology in terms of number of contracts for the quarter, accounting for 72 contracts and a 69.9% share, followed by Oil with 20 contracts and a 19.4% share. Coal stood in third place with 11 contracts and a 10.7% share.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, thermal held the third position in terms of number of contracts during Q4 2020 with a 12% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Thermal technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

1. Supply & Erection: 41 contracts and a 42.7% share
2. Project Implementation: 22 contracts and a 22.9% share
3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 19 contracts and a 19.8% share
4. Consulting & Similar Services: eight contracts and an 8.3% share
5. Power Purchase Agreement: six contracts and a 6.3% share.

Asia-Pacific leads thermal contracts activity in Q4 2020

Comparing contracts activity in thermal technology in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 35 contracts and a share of 36.5% during Q4 2020, followed by Europe with 23 contracts and a 24% share and North America with 18 contracts and an 18.8% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 15 contracts and a 15.6% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with five contracts and a 5.2% share.

The top issuers of contracts in Thermal technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

1. Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution (India): 3,085MW from one contract
2. ACWA Power International (Saudi Arabia): 2,389MW from one contract
3. AlDhahir Group (Jordan): 1,000MW capacity from one contract.

3. East China Electric Power Design Institute (China), Anhui No.1 Electric Power Construction (China) and Anhui No.2 Electric Power Engineering & Construction (China): 1,320MW capacity from one contract.
