Global power industry contracts for Q4 2020 down 19%

Power industry contracts activity in Q4 2020 saw 965 contracts announced, marking a drop of 19% over the last four-quarter average of 1,190, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Power industry contracts in Q4 2020: Europe leads global activity

On comparing contracts activity in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 387 contracts and a share of 40.1% during Q4 2020, followed by Asia-Pacific with 261 contracts and a 27% share and North America with 185 contracts and a 19.2% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 79 contracts and an 8.2% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with 53 contracts and a 5.5% share.

On the basis of the last four-quarter average, Europe held a lead over others with 493 contracts, followed by Asia-Pacific with 280.

Solar tops by technology in Q4 2020

Looking at contracts by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 331 contracts and a 41.4% share, followed by wind with 258 contracts and a 32.3% share and thermal with 96 contracts and a 12% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Generation Equipment was the most popular segment in global power contracts activity during Q4 2020, with 311 contracts, followed by Power Plant (264) and Electricity Procurement (184).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 409 contracts and a 42.4% share
  2. Project Implementation: 250 contracts and a 25.9% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 166 contracts and a 17.2% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 64 contracts and a 6.6% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 56 contracts and a 5.8% share
  6. Electricity Supply: 18 contracts and a 1.9% share
  7. Others: two contracts and a 0.2% share.

Power contracts in Q4 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution (India): 3,085MW from one contract
  2. ACWA Power International (Saudi Arabia): 2,589MW from two contracts
  3. Amazon Web Services (United States): 1,945MW capacity from seven contracts.

Power contracts in Q4 2020: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Adani Power Maharashtra (India): 3,085MW from one contract
  2. SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction (China): 2,513MW from three contracts
  3. Doggerbank Offshore Wind Farm Project one Projco (United Kingdom) and Doggerbank Offshore Wind Farm Project two Projco (United Kingdom): 1,920MW capacity from three contracts.
