Global power industry contracts for September 2019 down 40%

Power industry contracts activity in September 2019 saw 175 contracts announced, marking a drop of 40% over the last 12-month average of 292, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Power industry contracts in September 2019: Europe leads global activity

On comparing contracts activity in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 59 contracts and a share of 33.7% during September 2019, followed by North America with 54 contracts and a 30.9% share and Asia-Pacific with 40 contracts and a 22.9% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 16 contracts and a 9.1% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with six contracts and a 3.4% share.

On the basis of the last 12-month average, Europe held a lead over others with 108 contracts, followed by Asia-Pacific with 86.

Solar tops by technology in September 2019

Looking at contracts by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 59 contracts and a 37.3% share, followed by wind with 59 contracts and a 37.3% share and thermal with 28 contracts and a 17.7% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Generation Equipment was the most popular segment during September 2019, with 67 contracts, followed by Electricity Procurement (49) and Power Plant (42).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 63 contracts and a 36% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: 38 contracts and a 21.7% share
  3. Project Implementation: 36 contracts and a 20.6% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 14 contracts and an 8% share
  5. Consulting & Similar Services: 13 contracts and a 7.4% share
  6. Electricity Supply: 11 contracts and a 6.3% share.

Power contracts in September 2019: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Ministry of Electricity, Iraq (Iraq): 1,600MW from one contract
  2. Manila Electric (Philippines): 1,200MW from three contracts
  3. AT&T (United States): 960MW capacity from two contracts.

Power contracts in September 2019: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Siemens (Germany): 2,834MW from four contracts
  2. Orascom Construction (United Arab Emirates): 1,600MW from one contract
  3. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 930MW capacity from three contracts.
