The global power industry experienced a 20% decline in the number of batteries-related patent applications in Q3 2022 compared with the previous quarter. The total number of batteries-related grants dropped by 7% in Q3 2022, according to GlobalData’s Patent Analytics.

Notably, the number of batteries-related patent applications in the power industry was 1,848 in Q3 2022, versus 2,313 in the prior quarter.



The top five companies accounted for 32% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Contemporary Amperex Technology filed the most batteries patents within the power industry operations and technologies sector in Q3 2022. The company filed 269 batteries-related patents in the quarter, compared with 226 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Samsung SDI with 167 batteries patent filings, Toyota Motor (70 filings), and Ningde Times New Energy Technology (43 filings) in Q3 2022.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 21% share of total patent filings

The largest share of batteries related patent filings in the power industry in Q3 2022 was in China with 21%, followed by the US (18%) and South Korea (12%). The share represented by China was 6% lower than the 28% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
