Mersen Pioneers Safety and Reliability Solutions for Hydro Generators
Hydro power plants drive electric generators, which produce high-voltage AC power for the grid. These generators consist of two main components, a wound rotor (rotating part) driven by water turbine, running inside a stator (stationary part).
The DC excitation current is supplied to the collector assembly, which in turn passes current into the rotor through a collector system comprising slip rings, brush-holders and carbon brushes.
In 2009, Mersen designed and patented a dust extraction system integral to the brush-holder. Its main target is to collect carbon dust directly at its source, before it disperses all over the machine.
