The conventional plate heat exchanger was first developed in the 1930's. The PHE of today consists of a number of thin, corrugated plates that have rubber gaskets separating them or are welded together (or a combination of these).
In general, the engineered heat exchanger depends on the application. The plates are compressed together in a frame. Each plate separates the hot fluid from the cold fluid and thus acting as the heat transfer area.
A PHE can be used in almost any environment and for multiple applications. Its compact design saves space on the plant it is installed and also uses less material compared to a Shell and Tube HE for a given duty. The Plate Heat Exchanger is designed for a specific duty, however unlike Tube Heat Exchanger it can be modified to adapt to process changes.
