BWSC Complete Design, Construction and Commissioning of a 144MW Diesel Engine-Based Power Plant

Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor completed the design, construction and commissioning of a 144MW diesel engine-based power plant for Enemalta Corporation on Malta in 2012. The plant is located on Enemalta's Delimara site and replaces older generation units in another power station on the island.

The new plant was, from the outset, required to comply with stringent environmental standards, while also providing reliable, flexible and cost efficient electrical power. Furthermore the plant was required to occupy as little space as possible to reserve space for future extensions on the Delimara site.

Diesel engines utilising relatively low cost residual fuel oil fulfil many of above objectives, and are commonly used in small or medium-sized electrical grids. Unit size, start / stop and part load flexibility as well as high efficiency and a fuel type which is globally available favour this choice of prime mover technology under such circumstances.
