Vattenfall-led consortium commissions 288MW DanTysk wind farm in German North Sea

Swedish power firm Vattenfall and Munich’s municipal utility Stadtwerke München (SWM) have inaugurated the 288MW DanTysk offshore wind power facility, which is located in the German North Sea.

The plant is situated 70km west of Sylt Island. It houses 80 wind turbines supplied by German power equipment manufacturer Siemens.

Siemens was responsible for the supply, installation and commissioning of the turbines at the facility.

Each of the turbines have a power generation capacity of 3.6MW and feature 120-meter rotor.

ESB partners with Coriolis Energy to develop nine wind power projects in UK

Ireland’s Electricity Supply Board (ESB) has formed a development partnership with Coriolis Energy to set up nine wind power projects in the UK.

Projected power generation capacity of the developments will be up to 400MW. The firms are likely to spend approximately £600m on the proposed projects.

First of the nine onshore wind energy facilities is expected to be commissioned by 2019.

Once all the projects are operational, they will meet the power requirements of 225,000 households in the country.

Apple looks to invest more than €400m on power projects for its €850m Irish data centre

Apple is looking to invest more than €400m directly to fund at least six renewable energy projects in Ireland.

The firm has invited partnership proposals from green energy developers to set up multiple new projects, with each having a power generation capacity of up to 50MW, reports The Irish Times.

Apple has planned the projects to meet the energy requirements of its proposed €850m data centre at Athenry in Galway County, Ireland.

Energy requirements of the data centre, which will support Apple’s services including iTunes, Maps and Siri, is expected to be more than 300MW.

Trina Solar signs deal to build solar project in Hefei Xinzhan General Pilot Zone of China

Solar PV manufacturer Trina Solar has signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with the Administrative Committee of the
Hefei Xinzhan General Pilot Zone to set up distributed generation (DG) solar power and related projects of up to 300MW capacity in Hefei, Anhui Province in eastern China.

Under the initial phase of the project, the partners will undertake a 30MW commercial rooftop development. Trina Solar will start construction on this project in the second quarter the year

Once operational, the development will be one of the largest single-unit commercial rooftop projects in the Asian country.

Xinzhan General Pilot Zone is the chief solar photovoltaic (PV) industry development location in the Chinese city of Hefei. Through the collaboration, the authorities will assist Trina Solar to obtain support from the local government.

Siemens turns 864MW SylWin1 grid connection operational in German North Sea

German manufacturer Siemens has completed the installation of SylWin1 grid connection in the North Sea and handed it over to network operator TenneT.

The now-operational link is located at nearly 70km from the west of Sylt island in Germany. It will allow transmission of up to 864MW of renewable energy.

The link connects three offshore wind facilities, Butendiek, DanTysk and Sandbank, which have been equipped with 232 Siemens wind turbines in total and have a generation capacity of 288MW each.

More than 100 turbines have already been connected to the grid with work for the others in progress.

Renewable power to outpace nuclear generation capacity in Japan by 2030

Japan is expecting that renewable energy sources, including solar and hydro, will generate more power in the country than nuclear facilities by 2030.

According to a draft report published by the Japan Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, green energy will meet nearly 24% of the country’s power requirements in 15 years.

Atomic Power, on the other hand, will account for around 22% of Japan’s electricity mix by 2030, reports Bloomberg.

Nuclear power generation in the country had been postponed for long after the 2011 disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

Obama urges Congress to renew nuclear cooperation deal with China

US President Barack Obama’s administration has signed a 30-year renewal agreement of bilateral commercial nuclear cooperation with China and urged Congress to give its approval.

Congress is expected to take a decision in the next three months on the US-China Section 123 agreement, which puts forward the proposal for continued peaceful nuclear cooperation on the basis of mutual commitment to non-proliferation.

The agreement was signed in 1985 and is set to expire at the end of the year.

Alstom wins service extension contract for 317MW Sheringham Shoal offshore wind facility

France-based Alstom has won a service extension contract for the maintenance of the UK’s 317MW Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farm.

Statkraft has awarded the new contract to Alstom as an extension to the previous contract for the facility, which was commissioned in September 2012.

Scrira Offshore Energy, a joint venture formed by Statoil and Statkraft, was the developer for the project which is equipped with 88 wind turbines.

SunPower and Apple to build two solar projects in China

Solar panel producer SunPower has partnered with Apple to develop two power projects in ABA Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefectures of China.

Both plants will have a capacity of 40MW, which will be jointly owned by Apple and SunPower’s project joint venture partner, Sichuan Shengtian New Energy Development.

The projects include Hongyuan Huanju Ecological Energy project with 20MW capacity and Ruoergai Huanju Ecological Energy with 20MW. Both the projects are located in the ABA Prefecture and construction on these projects is already underway.

Construction for first nuclear power plant commences in Turkey

Russian nuclear power corporation Rosatom has started construction of the Akkuyu power plant in Turkey, the first nuclear project in the country.

The power station is being developed at the Akkuyu site in Mersin province along the Mediterranean shores and is expected to involve an investment of $20bn. It will house four power-generating units, each having a capacity to produce 1,200MW of nuclear energy.

The project, however, had been facing controversies from environmentalists over security concerns and its placement in an area rich in wildlife, reports Agence France-Presse.
