RWE Innogy abandons Atlantic Array offshore wind power project

RWE Innogy has pulled out of the Atlantic Array offshore wind power project in the Bristol Channel, due to technical challenges including substantially deeper waters and adverse seabed conditions that made the project uneconomical.

The company had won the bid for the Bristol Channel Zone in The Crown Estate’s third round of its leasing programme to deliver up to 25GW by 2020 of new offshore wind capacity.

In June 2013, the company submitted an application to the Planning Inspectorate for the proposed wind farm with up to 1,200MW of renewable energy.

Siemens to supply 20 industrial gas turbines in Thailand

Siemens Energy has won contracts to supply a total of 20 SGT-800 industrial gas turbines, set to be used in various combined cycle cogeneration power plants in Thailand.

Under the contract, Siemens will supply ten turbines to Amata B.Grimm Power (ABP), six turbines to SSUT and PPTC and four turbines to IRPC Clean Power.

The contract, which was awarded under the third phase of the government’s programme to support small power producers, is worth more than €300m, including installation and commissioning and will see the supply of turbines of 50.5MW each that will have a combined capacity of more than 1,000MW.

Obayashi receives contract to construct Nam Ngiep 1 hydropower project

Obayashi has received a contract from Nam Ngiep 1 Power to provide civil engineering works for the 288MW Nam Ngiep 1 hydropower project in Borikhamxay, Laos.

Under the contract, Obayashi will be responsible for the construction of the main dam body, two Francis power stations with outputs of 270MW and 18MW respectively and a road for the around $0.9bn project.

The project will also include concrete gravity dams on the Nam Ngiep River, a tributary of the Mekong. Its main dam will measure 148m in height, 530m in length at the top and the volume of the body is approximately two million m³.

FirstEnergy to invest $2.8bn to expand ‘Energizing the Future’ initiative

FirstEnergy plans to expand its proposed ‘Energizing the Future’ transmission initiative with an investment of $2.8bn over four years.

The expanded initiative is aimed at constructing 69kV of transmission power lines and substations in the Ohio Edison, Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company, Toledo Edison and Penn Power areas, with work set to start in 2014 and continue through 2017.

Under the initiative, the company will evaluate and rebuild around 7,200 circuit miles of 69kV and higher transmission lines, 170 substations and 70,000 transmission structures.

Areva wins €1.25bn contract for Angra 3 nuclear reactor in Brazil

French company Areva has won a €1.25bn contract from Eletrobras Eletronuclear to construct the 1,405MW Angra 3 nuclear reactor in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

According to the terms of the contract, Areva will deliver engineering services and components, the digital instrumentation and control system for the reactor and assist in the supervision of the installation works and commissioning activities.

Earlier in 2010, Eletrobras Termonuclear (Eletronuclear) had secured a permit from the Brazilian Government agency Comissao Nacional de Energia Nuclear (CNEN) to construct the new reactor at the Angra site, which already hosts two operating reactors 657MWe Angra 1 and 1,350MWe Angra 2.

Gamesa wins 210MW wind power order in Brazil

Spanish wind turbine manufacturer Gamesa has won a contract from Casa dos Ventos Energias Renovaveis to supply wind turbines totalling 210MW for the Chapada wind farm in the state of Piaui, Brazil.

According to the contract, Gamesa will supply, install and commission 105 G97-2.0MW turbines for the project to be built in Chapada do Araripe. The companies have also signed an agreement in principal for five-year maintenance of the project.

Gamesa will manufacture the turbines at its factory in Camacari and expects to begin delivery of the turbines after the first quarter of 2015, while the project is expected to be commissioned in the second half of the same year.

BHEL to provide highest rating pulverised lignite fired steam-generators

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won a contract in an international competitive bidding conducted by Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) to provide a steam generator package for a proposed 1,000MW lignite-based power plant in Tamil Nadu, India.

According to the contract, which is valued at €307m, BHEL will supply a steam generator package, which is said to be the highest rating pulverised lignite fired steam-generator, for two thermal units of 500MW each for the project.

The company plans to develop the proposed project at Neyveli, replacing the 600MW Thermal Power Station-I, units of which were commissioned between 1962 and 1970. NLC expects to commission the first unit of the plant in June 2015 and the second unit in December 2015.

Metso to supply automation for Asia’s largest biomass power plant

Finnish global engineering and technology company Metso has secured a contract from GS Engineering & Construction (GS E&C) to supply automation for the under-construction Dangjin 4 biomass power plant in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea.

According to the contract, Metso will supply a DNA automation system for the plant, including the circulating fluidised-bed (CFB) boiler, balance of plant and electric network.

The company will also provide a plant performance application and systems for thermal stress monitoring and vibration monitoring – all integrated into the control system.
