Risen Energy starts Yarranlea project construction in Australia
Chinese PV module producer Risen Energy started construction works on the 121MW Yarranlea solar farm project in Queensland, Australia.
In February, the Chinese firm acquired 100% stake in the project, which is located 50km south-west of Toowoomba. The project covers an area of 250ha.

Risen Energy will own and operate the completed facility, as well as the engineering, procurement and construction, delivery of modules and the follow-up adjustment and calibration upon completion of the project.
Southern Company to sell Florida assets for $6.4bn
US-based gas and electric utility Southern Company signed agreements to sell its Florida assets to NextEra Energy for approximately $6.4bn.
The sale includes Gulf Power Company, Florida City Gas and the entities holding Southern Power’s interests in Plant Oleander and Plant Stanton.
Net of debt, the deal reflects an equity value of around $5.075bn.

US-based energy company Conti Solar started construction on the largest landfill solar project in Ohio.
The 4MW solar project is located in Cuyahoga County and is owned and operated by IGS Solar, an affiliate company of IGS Energy.
IGS Solar vice-president Patrick Smith said: “It was essential that we partnered with a firm that has a proven track record in developing solar projects on top of sensitive landfill sites.
“It’s a unique niche, but Conti Solar’s vast experience, impeccable standards, and understanding of IGS Solar’s vision for the community has made Conti Solar the ideal partner for this project.”
New York proposes to make power plants coal-free by 2020
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) in the US released proposed regulations, which require all power plants in the state to meet new emissions limit for the potent greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) that contributes to climate change.
The regulations are set to achieve New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s goal to end the use of coal in the state’s power plants by 2020.
EBRD to organise loan for solarpower plant in Kazakhstan
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) along with Clean Technology Fund (CTF) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) revealed plans for an international financing to Baikonur Solar for the construction of a solarpower plant in central Kazakhstan.
The 50MW plant in Baikonur will be the first joint international renewable project in Kazakhstan for EBRD.
The financial package will comprise of two senior secured loans of up to $30m from the EBRD and up to $10.4m from the Clean Technology Fund. ADB is also providing up to $12m to co-finance the project.
Southern Power to sell interest in solar portfolio for $1.175bn
US-based energy provider Southern Power signed an agreement to sell 33% minority interest in its solar portfolio to Global Atlantic Financial Group in a deal valued at $1.175bn.
Under the deal, Global Atlantic will acquire 26 operating solar facilities representing nearly 1.7GW of capacity.
The energy generated by these facilities will be sold under long-term contracts with customers across the country.
Kyocera completes new solarpower plant in Japan
Kyocera TCL Solar completed construction of a utility-scale solarpower plant in Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture, Japan.
Works started on the 29.2MW utility-scale solarpower plant in September 2015.
Kyocera TCL Solar installed 108,504 modules on 1.2km² of land, which was originally designated for a golf course and other purposes. The land was subsequently abandoned.
Pivot Power to develop 2GW grid-scale battery network
UK-based Pivot Power was due to begin works with the National Grid to build a 2GW network of grid-scale batteries and rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country.
As part of the £1.6bn programme, Pivot Power is planning to develop 45 sites in the country with the installation of grid-scale 50MW batteries at electricity substations, which will be directly connected to the extra-high-voltage transmission system.
Infrastructure developed by the company is expected to support adoption of EV’s, as well as strengthen clean air policies in the UK.
SkyPower to build 1GW solar energy project in Uzbekistan
Canadian utility-scale solar energy developer SkyPower unveiled plans to build a 1GW project in Uzbekistan with an estimated $1.3bn foreign direct investment.
The project is reported to be the first solarpower project in the country and the largest foreign direct investment in Uzbekistan’s history.
SkyPower also signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Uzbek Government, whereby the latter has agreed to purchase power from an international private company.
Atlantis Resources and Xodus to explore tidal energy projects in Japan
Marine renewables developer Atlantis Resources signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Xodus Group to explore new opportunities for a tidal energy project in Japan.
By signing the new agreement, both companies intend to secure funding and build a tidal energy demonstration project of three to eight turbines in the country.
