Angra 2, Brazil

Angra 2 is a 1,350MW nuclear reactor which is located within the premises of Angra Nuclear Power Plant. It is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The nuclear reactor is currently generating power and is in active status. The construction on the reactor commenced in Jan, 1976. The first power from the reactor was achieved in Jul, 2000. Subsequent to trial runs the reactor finally entered into commercial operation in Feb, 2001.

Angra 2 is a Generation II nuclear reactor developed by Eletrobras Termonuclear and Framatome, are the main contractors for the project.

The 1,350MW reactor is owned and operated by Eletrobras Termonuclear. The company has a stake of 100%.

Angra 2 is a type of PWR reactor. It features 193 fuel assemblies in the core of reactor, the place where fission occurs and energy is released.

Development Status

The reactor construction commenced in Jan, 1976 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in Feb, 2001.

Contractors Involved

The steam turbines for the reactor have been supplied by Siemens AG and Framatome. Eletrobras Termonuclear was selected as an architect engineer for the reactor. The reactor system was supplied by Siemens AG and Framatome. The reactor vessel has been supplied by Gutehoffnunsghutte (GHH). The material used for the construction of the vessel is Alloyed Steel (20MnMoNi55). The civil works were carried out by Odebrecht.
