Barakah 1 is a 1,400MW nuclear reactor which is located within the premises of Barakah Nuclear Power Plant. It is located in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The nuclear reactor is currently generating power and is in active status. The construction on the reactor commenced in Jul, 2012. The first power from the reactor was achieved in Aug, 2020. Subsequent to trial runs the reactor finally entered into commercial operation in Apr, 2021.

Description
Barakah 1 is a Generation III nuclear reactor developed by Korea Electric Power, the main contractor for the project.
The 1,400MW reactor is currently owned by Emirates Nuclear Energy and operated by Nawah Energy.
Barakah 1 is a type of PWR reactor. It features 241 fuel assemblies in the core of reactor, the place where fission occurs and energy is released.
Development Status
The reactor construction commenced in Jul, 2012 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in Apr, 2021.
Contractors Involved
The steam turbines for the reactor have been supplied by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co Ltd and Toshiba Energy Systems and Solutions. KEPCO Engineering and Construction was selected as an architect engineer for the reactor. The reactor system was supplied by Korea Electric Power. The reactor vessel has been supplied by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction. The material used for the construction of the vessel is SA508, Grade 3, Class 1. The civil works were carried out by Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co Ltd and Samsung C&T.
