Description

Barakah 1 is a Generation III nuclear reactor developed by Korea Electric Power, the main contractor for the project.

The 1,417MW reactor is currently owned by Emirates Nuclear Energy (100%) and operated by Nawah Energy.

The PWR reactor generates 8,926.09GWh/annum of electricity. It features 241 fuel assemblies in the core of reactor, the place where fission occurs and energy is released.

Development status

The reactor construction commenced in Jul, 2012 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in Apr, 2021.

Contractors involved

The steam turbines for the reactor have been supplied by Doosan Enerbility and Toshiba Energy Systems and Solutions. KEPCO Engineering and Construction was selected as an architect engineer for the reactor. The reactor system was supplied by Korea Electric Power. The reactor vessel has been supplied by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction. The material used for the construction of the vessel is SA508, Grade 3, Class 1. The civil works were carried out by Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co Ltd and Samsung C&T.
