Budarhals, Iceland

Budarhals is a 95MW hydro power project. It is located on Tungnaa river/basin in South, Iceland. The project is currently active. It has been developed in single phase. The project construction commenced in 2010 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2014.

Description

The project is currently owned by Landsvirkjun hf.

The hydro reservoir capacity is 680 million cubic meter. The gross head of the project is 40m. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 2 in number. The penstock length is 60m. The penstock diameter is 5.8m. The project generated 585 GWh of electricity. The project cost is $197m.

Development Status

The project construction commenced in 2010 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2014.

Contractors Involved

Voith Hydro Holding was selected as the turbine supplier for the hydro power project. The company provided 2 units of kaplan turbines, each with 47.5MW nameplate capacity.

Voith Hydro Holding supplied 2 electric generators for the project.
