Itaipu-Paraguay is a 7,000MW hydro power project. It is located on Parana river/basin in Alto Parana, Paraguay. The project is currently active. It has been developed in single phase. The project construction commenced in 1975 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 1984.

Description

The project is currently owned by Itaipu Binacional with a stake of 100%.

Itaipu-Paraguay is a run-of-river project. The hydro reservoir capacity is 29,000 million cubic meter. The gross head of the project is 120m. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 20 in number. The penstock length is 142.2m. The penstock diameter is 10.5m. The project cost is $19,600m.

The hydro power project consists of 10 turbines, each with 700MW nameplate capacity.

Development Status

The project construction commenced in 1975 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 1984.

Contractors Involved

Voith Hydro Holding supplied electric generator(s) for the project. The generator capacity is 737 MVA.
