Karakaya is a 1,800MW hydro power project. It is located on Euphrates river/basin in Diyarbakir, Turkey. The project is currently active. It has been developed in single phase. The project construction commenced in 1976 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 1987.

Description

The project was developed by J.V. Italstrade Torno – ERG for Karakaya and is currently owned by Devlet su Isleri Genel Mudurlugu.

The hydro reservoir capacity is 9,580 million cubic meter. The total number of penstocks, pipes or long channels that carry water down from the hydroelectric reservoir to the turbines inside the actual power station, are 6 in number. The penstock length is 80m. The penstock diameter is 6m. The project generated 7,500 GWh of electricity.

Development Status

The project construction commenced in 1976 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 1987.

Contractors Involved

Andritz Hydro was selected as the turbine supplier for the hydro power project. The company provided 6 units of francis turbines, each with 300MW nameplate capacity.

GE Renewable Energy supplied 6 electric generators for the project.
