Nam Theun 2, Laos

Nam Theun 2 is a 1,070MW hydro power project. It is located on Nam Theun river/basin in Bolikhamxai, Laos. The project is currently active. It has been developed in single phase. The project construction commenced in 2005 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2009.

Description

The project was developed by Electricite de France. Electricite de France, Electricity Generating Public and Lao Holding State Enterprise are currently owning the project having ownership stake of 40%, 35% and 25% respectively.

The hydro reservoir capacity is 3,530 million cubic meter. The net head of the project is 348m. The project generated 5,936 GWh of electricity. The project cost is $1,300m.

Development Status

The project construction commenced in 2005 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 2009.

Power Purchase Agreement

Electricite du Laos and Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand are the power offtakers from the project.

Contractors Involved

Andritz Hydro was selected as the turbine supplier for the hydro power project. The company provided 4 units of francis turbines, each with 251.3MW nameplate capacity.
