Description

Palo Verde 3 is a Generation II nuclear reactor developed by Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric, are the main contractors for the project.

The 1,414MW reactor is operated by Arizona Public Service. Arizona Public Service, Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement And Power District, El Paso Electric, Southern California Edison, PNM, Southern California Public Power Authority and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power are currently owning the project having ownership stake of 29.1%, 17.49%, 15.8%, 15.8%, 10.2%, 5.91% and 5.7% respectively.

The PWR reactor generates 10,331.46GWh/annum of electricity. It features 241 fuel assemblies in the core of reactor, the place where fission occurs and energy is released.

Development status

The reactor construction commenced in Jun, 1976 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in Jan, 1988.

Contractors involved

GE Power was selected as the steam turbine supplier for the nuclear reactor. The company provided 1 steam turbine for the project. Bechtel was selected as an architect engineer for the reactor. The reactor system was supplied by Westinghouse Electric. The reactor vessel has been supplied by Westinghouse Electric. The material used for the construction of the vessel is Alloyed Steel (SA 533 B). The civil works were carried out by Bechtel.
