Sanmen 1 is a 1,251MW nuclear reactor which is located within the premises of Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant. It is located in Zhejiang, China. The nuclear reactor is currently generating power and is in active status. The construction on the reactor commenced in Apr, 2009. The first power from the reactor was achieved in Jun, 2018. Subsequent to trial runs the reactor finally entered into commercial operation in Sep, 2018.

Sanmen 1 is a Generation III+ nuclear reactor developed by China Nuclear Engineering & Construction, State Nuclear Power Technology and Westinghouse Electric, are the main contractors for the project.

The 1,251MW reactor is operated by Sanmen Nuclear Power. China National Nuclear, Zhejiang Provincial Energy Group, China Huadian and China Nuclear Engineering & Construction are currently owning the project having ownership stake of 51%, 20%, 10% and 5% respectively.

Sanmen 1 is a type of PWR reactor. It features 157 fuel assemblies in the core of reactor, the place where fission occurs and energy is released. The project cost is $3,009.906m.

Development Status

The reactor construction commenced in Apr, 2009 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in Sep, 2018.

Contractors Involved

The steam turbines for the reactor have been supplied by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd and Harbin Electric. Ansaldo Nucleare was selected as an architect engineer for the reactor. The reactor system was supplied by Westinghouse Electric. The reactor vessel has been supplied by Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction. The material used for the construction of the vessel is Carbon Steel. The civil works were carried out by China Nuclear Industry 22nd Construction and State Nuclear Power Technology.
