Description

Sizewell B is a Generation II nuclear reactor developed by GE Power, John Laing Group and Westinghouse Electric, are the main contractors for the project.

The 1,250MW reactor is operated by EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Group. Electricite de France and Centrica are currently owning the project having ownership stake of 80% and 20% respectively.

The PWR reactor generates 6,709.39GWh/annum of electricity. It features 193 fuel assemblies in the core of reactor, the place where fission occurs and energy is released. Safety contol rods that are used to control the fission rate in the reactor are 32 in number.

Development status

The reactor construction commenced in Jul, 1988 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in Sep, 1995.

Contractors involved

GE Power was selected as the steam turbine supplier for the nuclear reactor. The company provided 2 steam turbines for the project. The reactor system was supplied by Westinghouse Electric. The reactor vessel has been supplied by Framatome. The material used for the construction of the vessel is Alloyed Steel (SA 508/SA 533). The civil works were carried out by John Laing Group.
