The project is currently owned by American Electric Power.

Smith Mountain is a pumped storage project. The hydro reservoir capacity is 1,407.8 million cubic meter. The gross head and net head of the project are 187m and 183m respectively.

Development Status

The project construction commenced in 1960 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in 1965.

Contractors Involved

The turbines for the hydro power project have been supplied by Andritz Hydro and Voith Hydro Holding.

The electric generators for the project were procured from GE Renewable Energy and Voith Hydro Holding.
