ABB has secured a contract from German transmission grid operator TransnetBW for an electrical substation upgrade.

Under the $40m contract, ABB will be responsible for upgrading the Obermooweiler high-voltage substation in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

ABB Power Grids division president Claudio Facchin said: “With more than 30 years of technology partnership between ABB and TransnetBW, we are embarking on yet another innovation milestone.

“ABB’s eco-efficient GIS solution will lower environmental impact while strengthening the transmission grid.”

The electrical substation upgrade will see the installation of the world’s first 380kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) to help reduce environmental impact.

The switchgear uses an alternative gas mixture to the industry standard SF6 used controls and protects the network within the substation from power outages and facilitates reliable electricity supply.

SF6 is a greenhouse gas and has been used to a great extent in the electrical industry for several years.

The new 380kV Obermooweiler GIS substation is expected to support Germany in meeting its greenhouse gas emissions reduction target by 40% by 2020 and up to 95% by 2050.

TransnetBW managing director Dr Werner Götz said: “With this project, we are pleased to pave the way for a technical innovation that can make an important contribution to climate protection.”
