Swiss technology company ABB has secured orders from Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity to boost the country’s power infrastructure and meet electricity needs.

Under the contracts, ABB will deliver five fixed and 15 mobile 132kV substations to strengthen the power grid.

As part of the deal, ABB will be delivering products such as gas- and air-insulated switchgear, power transformers and capacitor banks to improve power quality.

"The substations will help to improve the electricity supply by expanding capacity and strengthening Iraq’s power infrastructure."

The orders also include the delivery of IEC 61850-based automation, protection and telecommunication systems to control and monitor substation assets.

The 15 mobile substations are expected to enable rapid electrification in some of the neediest areas in Iran.

ABB has been supplying air-insulated, gas-insulated and hybrid substations with voltage levels of up to 1,100kV.

The installation of new substations is expected to provide an efficient and reliable transmission and distribution of electricity with minimum impact on the environment.

ABB Grid Integration business head Patrick Fragman said: “The substations will help to improve the electricity supply by expanding capacity and strengthening Iraq’s power infrastructure.

“These projects add to our extensive installed base in the region and support our focus on growing markets, reinforcing ABB’s position as a partner of choice in enabling a stronger, smarter and greener grid.”

In February this year, the Swiss firm secured a contract from the German transmission system operator TransnetBW to upgrade a substation in Philippsburg.

Under the deal, ABB has agreed to supply 380kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) for the upgrade of the substation.
