Swiss technology company ABB has secured a $330m order to supply high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations in Tajikistan and Pakistan.

The order is part of CASA-1000 project and will be executed as a consortium project with Spanish engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) company, Cobra.

“The CASA-1000 converter stations will have the capacity to transmit 1.3GW of electricity at 500kV.”

ABB said the converter stations enable transmission of renewable hydropower over a distance of 800km from generation sites in the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan to consumption areas in Pakistan.

The CASA-1000 converter stations will have the capacity to transmit 1.3GW of electricity at 500kV.

The CASA-1000 project has been designed to support and manage the increasing demand for electricity in Pakistan, as well as allow Tajikistan to better use its hydropower generation.

Additionally, the project is expected to create a new platform to promote trade between the countries of Central Asia and South Asia by putting in place commercial and institutional arrangements and transmission infrastructure required.
