Spanish renewable energy company Acciona has started commissioning for its 183MW El Cortijo wind farm in Tamaulipas (Mexico), located 40km south of Reynosa.

The new wind farm is being built with an investment of nearly $235m and is reported to be the first to enter service following the Energy reform in Mexico.

El Cortijo features 61 3MW wind turbines of Nordex Acciona Windpower technology. The turbines have a rotor diameter of 125m and are built on 120m-high (hub height) concrete towers.

"The wind farm will have the capacity to generate electricity for 350,000 Mexican homes, and also avoid more than 429,000t of COemissions per year."

The company grid has connected the first wind turbines, which will continue until the commercial commissioning of the whole facility.

The wind farm will have the capacity to generate electricity that could power 350,000 Mexican homes, and also avoid more than 429,000t of COemissions per year.

The project is said to have supported 570 employment opportunities in the region.

Acciona México CEO Miguel Angel Alonso said: “We are very pleased to have begun the commissioning of El Cortijo just fifteen months after starting the building work with an exemplary construction process.

“Acciona Energía always completes its projects on schedule, and we believe that this commitment to the projects awarded to it is a key factor in renewable energies developing as we all desire.”

The company started construction on El Cortijo last year, which is the fifth wind farm under Acciona’s ownership in Mexico.

In addition to El Cortijo wind farm, Acciona is building a 404MWp photovoltaic complex in Sonora, Mexico.
