Global power and energy provider Aggreko is providing 6MW generators fuelled by biogas derived from tapioca to engineering company Repower in Thailand.

Aggreko gets feedstock for the facility from a tapioca factory. The wastewater and biomass are captured in the country’s largest dual feedstock anaerobic digester, producing up to 100,000m3 of biogas a day.

Aggreko group product director Bill Carrick said: “Converting waste gas not only has cost benefits for the customer but also generates a much cleaner energy source for the wider region and has significantly reduced the facility’s carbon emissions.”

According to the energy provider, the project will deliver a reduction of three million tonnes of CO2 emissions during the course of five years and is already achieving 15 out of 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs were set in 2015 as a “universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2015” and are integrated solutions for a sustainable development.

“We are proud to be supporting such an innovative project which is so closely aligned with the UN’s SDGs, and look forward to continuing our relationship with Repower to deliver both cost and carbon reductions over the coming years,” added Carrick.

The project – Aggreko’s second biogas project – is also cost-beneficial, as it will save Repower $1m in grid costs every year, said the company.
