BASF has awarded a contract to global technology company Siemens to modernise the industrial power plant in Schwarzheide, Germany.

Called the Brownfield Exchange project, the modernisation programme will see the replacement of an existing industrial gas turbine with a 57MW capacity SGT-800 gas turbine.

The plant features two industrial gas turbines from another original equipment manufacturer and two industrial steam turbines from Siemens.

Siemens stated that its SGT-800 gas turbine has been designed to burn a low amount of natural gas to produce electricity, leading to reduced fuel costs and carbon dioxide emissions. The company has agreed to service the turbine for a period of 15 years.

Siemens Gas and Power Service Distributed Generation and Oil & Gas CEO Thorbjörn Fors said: “We are pleased that BASF has placed its trust in Siemens to carry out this Brownfield Exchange project.

“Adapting the new gas turbine to the existing plant and carrying out the other necessary renovations require complex individual planning and extensive engineering expertise.

Siemens will also be installing Siestart battery storage solution, which will be provided by Fluence Energy, a company of Siemens and AES. The solution will eliminate the power plant’s dependence on an external power supply and allow it to be able to blackstart.

This capability will enable BASF to start up the plant at any time and produce the necessary electricity and steam. The BASF’s Schwarzheide combined cycle power plant also provides process steam needed for the production plants at the site in addition to electricity.
