Hitachi subsidiary Horizon Nuclear Power has selected US-based engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) firm Bechtel as the project management contractor for a new, two-reactor nuclear plant called Wylfa Newydd in the UK.

The 2,700MW Wylfa Newydd power station will be built on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales.

"Wylfa Newydd is expected to generate enough low-carbon electricity to power nearly 5.5 million homes and businesses in the region."

It is part of the UK’s plans to offer low-carbon energy by replacing ageing nuclear stations and fossil fuel plants with modern nuclear plants and renewable energy.

Upon completion, Wylfa Newydd is expected to generate enough low-carbon electricity to power nearly 5.5 million homes and businesses in the region.

Bechtel government services and commercial nuclear power business president Barbara Rusinko said: “This is a critically important project for the UK and the future of nuclear power.

“We are honoured to be selected for this important role and committed to the long-term future of nuclear as a safe and reliable, 24/7 provider of electricity.”
