Solar photovoltaic (PV) modules manufacturer Canadian Solar has won three solar PV projects totalling 393.7MW in Brazil. The projects were secured in two private corporate auctions held in the third quarter of 2019.

Canadian Solar has plans to develop and construct a 190.5MW project in the State of Pernambuco, and 76.2MW capacity in the State of Ceará. The project in Ceará will be an expansion of the existing Project Lavras.

The third project will be a 127MW project in the State of Minas Gerais, southeast of Brazil and is expected to enter the commercial operation phase before January 2023.

This facility is expected to generate nearly 280GWh of clean electricity a year once it commences operations.

Canadian Solar chairman and CEO Dr Shawn Qu said: “We are proud to be the only company that has been successful in winning projects in all six federal energy auctions held to date in Brazil and now winning our first batch of corporate PPAs in this booming market.

“This win demonstrates our long-term commitment to solar energy in Brazil and is the first step to initiate investment in the Brazilian Corporate Power Purchase Agreements market.”

Construction works of the first two solar facilities are expected to begin in 2021 with commercial operations to start before the end of 2022.

Once operational, the two facilities are expected to generate nearly 598GWh of clean electricity per year.

Under two 15-year power purchase agreements (PPAs), the majority of energy will be supplied to Brazilian power utility Copel. The company noted that all three projects will be equipped with its bifacial BiHiKu modules.

In Latin America, Canadian Solar has in place more than 2GW of awarded and contracted PPAs.
