Solar photovoltaic (PV) modules manufacturer Canadian Solar has secured two solar PV projects in Brazil.

With a combined capacity of 190.5MWp, the projects were awarded to the company in the 7th Brazilian Federal Auction.

Canadian Solar chairman and CEO Dr Shawn Qu said: “We are proud to be the only company that has been successful in winning projects in all seven federal energy auctions held to date in Brazil.

“This auction win further strengthens our leading position in the Brazilian solar market where we have been awarded accumulatively around 1.6GWp of PPAs.”

As part of the contract, Canadian Solar will be responsible for the construction of the 152.4MWp Gameleira project in Ceará and the 38.1MWp Luiz Gonzaga project in Pernambuco.

Construction works for the two projects are expected to respectively begin in the third quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022.

Both projects are expected to come online before January 2023, which is two years earlier than the date set by the Brazilian Government.

The government allocated a total of 2,979MW of generation capacity, of which 530MW was solar.

During the auction, the government allocated a total of 2,979MW of renewable energy generation capacity. It is the first time that Canadian Solar participated in an A-6 energy auction.

Once operational, the two facilities will have the capacity to generate approximately 433GWh of electricity annually.

Approximately 30% of clean energy generated by these facilities will be sold to various distribution companies under two 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs).

The remaining portion of the electricity will be sold through long-term private PPAs, which are currently under negotiation.
